This thread discusses the Content article: Increase in serious pneumococcal infections not covered by childhood vaccine

This article is a great reminder that the diseases we thought are ancient history can be come prevalent today.

I think educating the public about vaccinnations is a key but I also think that resistant forms are easily established in this environment.

You make a great point about increases in resistant forms.

I think the article is indicating that research and development into new sub-types of vaccines should be investigated just as intensively now as when the vaccine was first developed so we can be prepared the new strains that arise.

I think it is impossible to "keep one step" of pathogens because the genetic mutations are random.

Once a new resistant strain develops, the goal should be to prepare an effective vaccine as soon as possible.

It is possible to anticipate because of the biotechology that is available. Not necessarily that it will be successful but I know that pharmaceutical companies engineer a broad range of randomly mutated strains and identify which mutations could likely cause a resistant phenotype.
