Medical practices are required to protect against identity theft

Medical practices and hospitals have a Nov. 1, 2009 deadline to implement a written "identity theft protection plan," also known as "red flag" rules. Despite objections from the AMA, the FTC has confirmend that even small practices must implement a plan. Oct. 5, 2009: The Nobel Prize in physiology was awarded today to Elizabeth H. Blackburn (UCSF), Carol W. Greider (Johns Hopkins), and Jack W. Szostak (Harvard Mass. Gen. Hospital) for the discovery of "how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase". Source: Nobelprize.org
 
Autism rates jump

Oct. 5, 2009: A new report in the journal Pediatrics suggests that the rate of Autism Spectrum Disorders in the U.S. is 1 in 100 children, comparable to rates seen in Japan and the U.K. The rate for boys is 1 in 58. The cause of the jump is unkown, and surprising is the finding that 40% of respondents said their child was initially diagnosed with ASD but is no longer symptomatic.
