I've been informally consulting on a cochlear implant study recently. I guessed I shouldn't be surprised, but it's amazing how much disparity there is in who gets cochlear implants and how successful rehabilitation is after implantation.
Congenital severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is found in higher proportions of children with minority and/or lower socioeconomic status (SES).
The study concluded:
White and Asian children with severe to profound SNHL had higher proportionate rates of cochlear implantation than black and Hispanic children in 1997. Implanted children were more likely to live in areas (represented by ZIP codes) with higher median incomes.
It seems that implantation should be regulated and subsidized to reduce this disparity. Hospital Ratings Medical Resource Group, LLC
