My concern with treating children with medications for anxiety or depression is that it may not be the best option.
There are so many inter-related and complicated issues related to child development, medications may not necessarily address the underlying cause of a particular behavior.

The article did mention that the results were better for adolescents. Perhaps by adolescence, chemical inbalance is the more likely cause of behavioral problems?
In that case, medications can help address chemical inbalances.

My concern is that many of the medications used to treat children and adolescents have not been carefully evaluated and approved by the FDA.
We should use more evidence based medicine for using anti-anxiety and anti-depressant medications in younger people.

The problem with clinical trials in children are the ethics issues, which are valid issues.
However, it would be better to have clinical trials to get a full understanding of the effects in children.
Can we utilize results from adult trials as a starting point and extrapolate possible dosages to test based on those results?
What are the risks in doing that?
