The article seems to suggest that the desire to control your own schedule and work hours is new, because this "new generation" values work/life balance more than the boomer generation.
I couldn't disagree more. Every generation of physicians values control of their own lives - that's why many boomers got into medicine in the first place - you're your own boss.
The difference now is that fewer new physicians are their own bosses. More and more work for large practices, hospitals, or, in truth, insurance companies. They don't have the control over their own lives that previous generations did.
I don't think this is a change in values, but a natural reaction to changes in the practice of medicine. Hospital Ratings Medical Resource Group, LLC

I agree with Naoum. I have some friends who have been physicians for a few years and they all told me they wanted a balanced life with more control of their time before they even started medical school.
I know several physicians who decided to work part-time to make sure that they do have the balance they want in their lives.

As a first year medical student, I want to prevent burnout and stress by keeping my options open. I think medicine has so many opportunities that ifI find I am getting too stressed in one area, I will pursue a different pathway at that point.
For currently practicing physicians, based on your experience: I was wondering how realistic is it to change career pathyways? Am I being naive?

Since there are more doctors being produced (see other article on this site), maybe it will be easier to have a part-time practice and share the patients with another part-time colleague.
Perhaps that will reduce stress and burnout.

Will patient care suffer if the patient is seeing several physicians? What has happened to continuity of care?

There are not only more DOs, MDs, and IMGs, there are more PAs, NPs, etc that can do many of the same things that a physician can do.
What do you think is the role for other types of healthcare providers?
