This thread discusses the Content article: Physician Ranking: health care transparency or scam?

Any ranking system can be vuberable to bias or inapropriate measures but I think as the parameters for identifying more effecitve clinicians evolves, both healthcare providers and patients will benefit.

Quality of patient care will improve as cost goes down because every industry needs competition to become efficient

But Medicine is both an art and a science. How can quality of care parameters objectively assess a patient encounter where there are serious societal issues at play? For example, what about a demented patient, abused wife or alcoholic ?

I think the ranking system can work for low acuity patients with simple problems. The more complex patient will be much more difficult to quantify.

But is it necessary to quantify the more complex patients?

Since a significant number of patients are complex, it is important to identify their quality of care.

The point of the rankings is to make physicians more accountable, what other approach can we take ? Or does this approach just needs some refining?
