This thread discusses the Content article: Pay for Performance: Will It Make a Difference?

This is an excellent article that raises some very good points. Medicine is a unique profession where pay for performance does not make sense. I don't think additional money would be an an incentive because physicians are already well compensated.

What are better approaches to improving quality?

I think the more important question is whether statistical data can identify physicians that are delivering better healthcare. I don't think so. Statistics address the concerns of the insurance compnay, not the needs of the patient.

The bottom line is that patients want doctors that listen to them. Doctors who are good communicators will provide the quality of care that patients desire. In other words, following a set of procedures without the patient's concerns in mind will not represent good medicine.
