This thread discusses the Content article: Potential and Problems of E-Prescribing

I think E-prescribing would reduce errors and save time for both physicians and pharmacists.

I don't know of its capabilities but if it could alert the physcian to an unusual dose request or to less expensive alternatives available, it would improve patient safety and help lower health care costs.

I believe a major concern is that the technology is still relatively new and could have some unexpected problems that may compromise patient safety.

Why not have a back-up system while it is being implemented: to verify orders are accurately processed as well as to identify any "glitches" in the system?

Ultimately E-prescribing will be implemeted by most providers for several reasons including patient safety and economics. Because of its advantages, do you think it is likely that most of the start-up costs will paid for by governmental agencies or private companies?

Like anything new, there will be resistance but I think it has been proven that electronically based health records have less errors associated with them.

Electronic processing does decrease errors but it can be difficult to learn, which can increase errors initially.
