This thread discusses the Content article: Can Big Brother Keep a Secret? The National Practitioner Data Bank

As a future physician, I have been wondering about the consequences of making the records of practicing healthcare professionals more transparent. I thought some good points were raised in the article, particularly the fact that some physicians work with high risk populations. I am concerned that as records become more publically available that fewer physicians will want to work with high risk groups, the groups who need physicians the most.

Since it appears the public records of physicians will become increasingly available, perhaps there is some way to identify the results of malpractice suits (i.e. was the lawsuit even justified?) and details of any actions taken by liscensing boards, etc?

It seems to me that just listing lawsuits and actions of various organizations does not give an accurate picture of the competency of the physician since there is a myriad of reasons why a lawsuit or action is instigated.

I think the database requirements will only cause healthcare costs to increase without significant benefits. There is a value of knowing which practioners are incompetent but I don't think this form of public disclosure will accurately identify them.
