This thread discusses the Content article: Physician web usage trends

I use the internet extensively to post on discussion forums, read posts and keep up with the latest medical and scientific news. I am wondering how many physicians will use the web for more interactions with patients (i.e. answer email questions from patients)?

It is great that physicians are taking advantage of the newest technology. Can that be expanded to discuss patients? For example, discussing unique cases that required a novel approach to treat or diagnose.

Or would that be too difficult to do because of HIPPA? Another factor: would physicians prefer to to continue discuss unique cases via case reports in tradtional journals?

That is a great idea to discuss unique cases via the internet. The information would be available much quicker. But, I don't think that most doctors are using the internet that extensively and rely on more traditional methods of obtaining data.

Perhaps technology related to medicine should be emphasized in medical school?

I am in medical school currently and we use technology (including the internet) extensively. So I don't think an additional class is necessary to introduce medical students to it.

If you don't know how to use the technology during medical school, you will not graduate. So I imagine the newest generations of physicians will become very dependent on the internet for information exchange. Good or Bad idea?

I think it is a good idea that the internet will be used more by future physicians but it can't replace developing personal relationships with patients and colleagues.

But I also think it can enhance patient-physician relationships by increasing access to physicians (i.e. email).
