Having been involved in clinical research and knowing how carefully clinical trials are regulated, I have wondered the merits of using products for unlabeled uses.

I think an important consideration in using products in off-label uses is the differences between patient populations. I would guess that certain groups are much more vunerable to having complications because of their vunerability (children and the elderly).

I agree that certain populations are more vunerable but I also think that certain types of patients are more vunerable due to their underlying medical conditions. Another important factor is the experience of the healthcare professionals using the off-labeled stents. Studies have shown that the more a hospital uses a procedure, the less complications occur.

Clinical trials have very careful inclusion/exclusion criteria. Are the same criteria used when applying an off-labeled use?
