This thread discusses the Content article: Possible molecular marker for pancreatic cancer

Biotechnology is fabulous and can be a tremendous tool in diagnosis and treatment. But who is going to pay for the tests?

Molecular tests are definitely expensive and it would not be feasible to screen all cancer patients.

Perhaps use a less expensive screen to identify patients who may benefit from more detailed testing?

Regarding less expensive screens, an idea would be to utilize something like squencing the genes of interest or doing genomic fingerprinting like they do in criminal cases.

The screening tests you mentioned are less expensive but the problem is you need to know if the genes being targeted are the key genes in the process.

I think the first step is to use microarrays to identify global patterns of gene expression in various disease states and then do further analysis to identify subsets of genes that are critical to disease progression.
