I am not surprised by this data, cardiac muscle has several levels of regulation.

Hormone replacement by itself would not control for other degenerative or inflammatory processes occuring in an aging heart.

What about all the data showing the protective effect of estrogen in preventing cardiovascular disease in younger women? Obviously estrogen is having some impact on the cardiovascular system...wherever there are estrogen receptors, an impact will occur.
