I think drug resistance will always be a problem when trying to combat bacterial or viral disease. Because of short generation time and hypervariable DNA regions, evolution to adapt to environmental changes can occur quickly in microorganisms.
It seems like we have to evolve new varieties of drug more quickly than the microorganisms evolve. Perhaps one could rotate through a series of drugs that utilize the same mechanism and are equally effective? How feasible is that?
