A class of broad-spectrum antibiotics first isolated from the Mediterranean fungus Acremonium (Cephalosporium acremonium). Cephalosporins inhibit mucopeptide synthesis by binding to penicillin binding proteins, causing inhibition of bacterial cell wall synthesis. (NCI)
