Clinical studies evaluate potential treatments for mouth ulcers E-mail

The drug pentoxifylline appears to have limited benefit in the first-line treatment of mouth ulcers due to recurrent apthous stomatitis, according to a report in the April issue of Archives of Dermatology , one of the JAMA/Archives journals. However, a second report in the same issue finds that a cream commonly used to treat eczema may be effective in patients with another ulcer-causing mouth disease, oral erosive lichen planus.

Resident work hour restrictions may be costly for teaching hospitals E-mail

An analysis based on a computer model suggests that recent educational mandates that resident physicians work fewer hours may cost teaching hospitals hundreds of thousands of dollars—or more—if they replace surgical residents with other clinicians, according to a report in the April issue of Archives of Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Obesity may be linked to middle ear effusions in children E-mail

Childhood obesity may be associated with a condition known as otitis media with effusion, which consists of fluid build-up in the middle ear space without symptoms of acute ear infection, according to a report in the April issue of Archives of Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Link found between immune system and high plasma lipid levels E-mail

Researchers at the University of Chicago have found an unsuspected link between the immune system and high plasma lipid levels (cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood) in mice. The finding could lead to new ways to reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering elevated lipid levels.

CDC changes recommendations for gonorrhea treatment due to drug resistance E-mail

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) no longer recommends antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, and levofloxacin) as a treatment for gonorrhea in the United States. This limits the options available to treat gonorrhea, one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the United States.
