Definition of Xanthine Dehydrogenase
A homodimer, belongs to the family of molybdenum-containing hydroxylases involved in the oxidative metabolism of purines. Xanthine dehydrogenase can be converted to xanthine oxidase by reversible sulfhydryl oxidation or by irreversible proteolytic modification. Xanthine oxidase (EC 1.1.3.22), a unimolecular, multicomponent electron transport system (with cofactors), catalyzes the oxidation of xanthine to uric acid. Xanthine dehydrogenase is the mian form exists in liver in vivo. Defects in xanthine dehydrogenase cause xanthinuria, may contribute to adult respiratory stress syndrome, and may potentiate influenza infection through an oxygen metabolite-dependent mechanism.
